Sparsholt College
Every year, Sparsholt College holds their graduation ceremony amid the historic surroundings of Winchester Cathedral. They wanted as many people as possible to witness this memorable occasion, and asked us to live stream the ceremony to friends and family worldwide. Here’s what happened.
The client:
Sparsholt is one of the UK’s leading colleges for countryside-based subjects such as agriculture, forestry and woodland management. Each year, their graduation ceremonies take place in the historic surroundings of Winchester Cathedral.
The brief:
We’ve been working with Sparsholt College since 2015, initially filming and editing videos of their graduation events.
Over the years, the project has evolved to become multi-purpose. Since 2019, the ceremony has been live streamed to an online audience, and simultaneously relayed via screens set up in Winchester Cathedral itself. The idea is that everyone in this long, narrow venue — including the online audience — can get a front row view.

“Our goal was to ensure that as many people as possible could witness this wonderful occasion. We wanted to include family and friends from all over the world, making the graduation a truly inclusive celebration.”
This was about making memories, so we also offered a 2-minute highlight reel of the day. For the graduates, this would be a lifelong memento. For Sparsholt, it’s valuable marketing content.
The process:
First, the live video production. This involved setting up screens and microphones in Winchester Cathedral, so we called upon the skills of colleagues at our sister company, Designed Event Production. They’re technical event production experts.
Meanwhile,we set up the tech for filming — two operated cameras, two static PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras and a drone for aerial footage.
On the day, our camera operators caught the pre-ceremony buzz as people arrived, and each student’s big moment as they received their degrees. At the same time, our static PTZ cameras were perfectly placed for stunning shots of the cathedral interior, plus close-ups of the lectern where speeches took place.
At our control point, we took care of live vision mixing — relaying every detail via the big screens — and coordinated the live transmission to people watching online.

The result:
For online viewers, the live audience and students, this professionally produced video is a visual memento which they can look back on for years to come.
With its multiple camera angles, imaginative production techniques and well-chosen background music, the video perfectly captured the unique atmosphere of the event. And, as you’ll see from the video, our drone filming came into its own. It gave viewers a stunning panoramic view of this incredible historic location.
